PROTECTING YOUR PATCH/BUSH

OUR BUSH
It's a place that we have all visited at some time, a place where we have had adventures, enjoyed peace and quite, and discovered plants and animals. We think of the "bush" as a natural Filpino environment, something that we Filipinos identify with. It might be the gully down the road, or the local sand dunes, or even your local national park. What ever it is , there's usually a small area of bush close by.
Unfortunately, there's not as much bush around as there used to be. As our cities, farms  and highways grow. They remove more native vegetation ( the trees and smaller plants that have been in the Philippines for a thousand years).
Not only is the bush shrinking , in many places it's also losing its natural quality. It doesn't have the same range of native animals and plants  that it once did. It is infested with weeds , and its suffering from rubbish, chemical pollutants and erosion. In places, the Filipino bush could do with a bit of friendly help. Are you in a position to provide it? Could you be a mate to your local bush?

WHY BOTHER?
The bush is an important part of a healthy environment(ecosystem) for humans and all life. Besides providing an important place for recreation , the vegetation also protects the land from becoming degraded and eroded. In turn, this helps protect the water catchment and the bush naturally filters clean water for us.
Native vegetation also provides home(habitats) for wildlife, from insects to larger mammals. Indeed, it helps preserve biodiversity( the variety of life) which may provide future "resources" for people in terms of new food, new medicines and chemicals. Native animals and plant species become endangered when their habitats are lost in too may areas.
We take the bush for granted but imagine the future if we lost it. SAVING THE BUSH IS ABOUT LOOKING AFTER AN ENVIRONMENT THAT IMPROVES OUR LIVES AND THOSE OF PEOPLE IN THE FUTURE.

  WHERE TO START?
You know the saying" Think Globally, Act Locally"...., it makes a lot of sense when your looking to save Philippine bush. You could get to know your own area better as its closer.  Looking a little piece of local bush can make a difference. Every area of native vegetation no matter how small carries some ecological value..

More importantly , by making an effort to save your local bush , you're learning general methods that you can apply to other natural areas later. You're also learning the general problems that confront our environment . Whether you become a researcher  or just remain  a concerned member of the public, the experience of looking after a bush will prove invaluable  to your future activities. So, START NOW IN               GETTING TO KNOW YOUR LOCAL  BUSH ECOSYSTEM , MAKE REHABILITATION/RESTORATIONS, CONSERVE THE BUSHES IN YOUR LOCALITY  AND SEE HOW NATURE WORKS!!!!!!!

The Municipality of Monkayo is strictly implementing the Proper Solid Waste Disposal in view of the memorandum order no.147 and 156 of CY 2011 issued by the  Hon.Mayor  Manuel B. Brillantes.  It ordered that everyone must have the three segregated receptacles such as BIODEGRADABLE,RESIDUAL and RECYCLABLES with cover and label it properly.
This is in preparation for the upcoming PROVINCIAL and NATIONAL EVALUATION ON SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT MONTH  at the end of OCTOBER 2011 and it also encourages everyone to revisit the implementation of 5 S in order to ensure the best practices in segregating the garbage. Signage are found along the streets, in market place and other strategic places for everybody to see and to follow.
Monkayo National High School supports the memorandum because the school also is applying the Proper Waste Disposal as well as the R.A. 9003 and constantly reminding us—students that we should always make our school clean and garbage free with proper segregation. To be able for students to be constantly reminded of this practice, signage can be seen in bulletin boards of their classrooms. The WOW club (War On Wastes) organize the daily "Basura Patrollers" who were responsible for picking up , following up the cleanliness of the school surroundings with the assistance of the YES-O , PSYSC and Rain Watchers Clubs. Everyone is also practicing the rule" BASURA MO, IBULSA MO" so that littering can be avoided.

Last August , after the town fiesta the Supreme Student Government (SSG) of Monkayo National High School spearheaded  and  conducted a community service inside Poblacion,  They want to help  maintain the cleanliness around the place.
In cooperation with the MNHS faculty, YES-O officers, PSYSC officers, Rainwatchers Club officers  and Interact Club officers  and different club members ........they wandered around the Poblacion and picked up pieces of papers and cellophane. They're doing this not only because they want an exposure, but because they care about the dying Mother Earth by acting locally but thinking globally.

 PART 2-----10:30 - 11:45 AM

The theme was "HOT CHOCOLATE OVER COOL EARTH".  The guest speaker of the said program was Dr. Wenifredo Maglana, the founder of the Balik Kinaiyahan Foundation in Nabunturan, Compostela Valley. He showed a film about state of the hillsides before....barren with cogon grasses and unproductive. And another slides depicting the status of the hillside environment today which is fully planted with trees and have diverse plants , birds and animals around. The springwater in its base is flowing  in greater volume  since trees according to him serves as tributaries being natural water reservoir."One mature tree alone can hold water up to 60 gallons in its roots".....according to him.. So, Nabunturan has clean alternative source of water now.He also encourages people of Monkayo to do the same since there are so many hiilsides in this municipality that are left or abandoned.. He stressed further the impact of trees to the weather and climate of our province. ...creating cooling effect resulting to fast condensation and precipitation...thus, no drought will occur in our province.
The forum ended with the different club advisers, officers and members pledging to the rehabilitation of the hillsides of Monkayo by planting more trees.

( We got this travelogue from  the interviews  we have  had from teachers/students  who have gone to Balik Kinaiyahan Foundation)

Last July1-2,2011, the Monkayo National High School science teachers with the Principal III ,Mrs. Editha T. And in between rows of trees are patches of lots planted with vegetables and flowers. The group said that they really admire the wonders of the diversity of living things in the surroundings from plants to animals."There is co-existence taking place among wildlifes.."..according to Dr. Maglana. He added that amidst his busy schedule in New York,USA as surgeon, he always see to it that  July will be his vacation month to visit Philippines and stay in this hilltop for he consider this as paradise and that this forest as his legacy to the people of Nabunturan bringing the town bountiful water supply from the watershed of the NBK foundation.
The group have dinner by candlelight and entertained by the sound of the birds chirping and the singing of the night crickets under the moonlit night. After eating, Dr. Maglana shared his  stories of environmental activities done to develop this area and how he had influenced other people in the community to join his cause of preserving this hillside as water reservoir of the town. . By 11:00p.m. the group lay down to rest with the coolness of the surroundings as natural air conditioning.
Upon waking up , they have seen the thick low lying clouds covering the town proper below and witness how this fog rises as the sun perks on the mountain fronting them. What a sight to behold! according to ma'am Eding.....They have breakfast  cooked by Efrain Celiz(Gen Science teacher) of fresh vegetables harvested from the gardens of the foundation. And on their n their way home...as they walk along the trails....,they carried the treasured memories  of their stay ....a night at  the hilltop  of Nabunturan.
